Moving companies charge based on whether it's a local or long-distance move, using hourly rates (per mover) for local jobs and weight/distance/volume for long hauls, with extra fees for packing, stairs, or long carries, plus potential fuel surcharges, all calculated from your home size, inventory, and distance.

Local Moves (Hourly Rates)

  • Structure: Most local moves (under 100 miles) are charged by the hour, multiplied by the number of movers.

  • Rates: Expect around $25–$75 per mover per hour, or $80–$120+ per hour for a crew with a truck.

  • Factors: The bigger your home, the more time it takes, increasing the total cost.

  • Example: A 2-bedroom move might take 3 movers for 6 hours, costing roughly $1,440 (3 movers x $80/hr x 6 hrs).

Long-Distance Moves (Weight/Distance/Volume)

  • Structure: Costs are based on weight (often $0.50–$0.80/lb), distance, and the volume of your belongings, using a flat fee or binding estimate.

  • Factors: Gas, tolls, driver pay, and the sheer distance significantly raise the price.

Additional Charges & Fees

  • Packing Services: Extra cost for supplies and labor.

  • Long Carry Fees: For moving items long distances from the truck to the door.

  • Stairs/Elevators: Difficult access (many stairs, tight hallways) adds to the bill.

  • Fuel Surcharges: Especially for long-distance moves.

  • Disassembly/Reassembly: Furniture breakdown and setup.
